Breaking News: Major Earthquake Hits Japan, Causing Widespread Damage

Magnitude 7.5 Earthquake Strikes Northeast Honshu

Over 100 Killed, Thousands Injured

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 struck northeastern Honshu, Japan, at 10:41 AM local time on March 11, 2023. The epicenter was located about 80 kilometers from the city of Sendai, and it shook the region for about two minutes.

The earthquake caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure. More than 100 people have been confirmed dead, and thousands more have been injured. Rescue workers are currently searching for survivors.

The earthquake has triggered a tsunami advisory for the Pacific coast of Japan, including the prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima, and Ibaraki. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to evacuate to higher ground.

The Japanese government has declared a state of emergency for the affected areas. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has pledged to provide all necessary assistance to victims of the disaster.

The earthquake is the strongest to hit Japan since the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. That earthquake, which had a magnitude of 9.0, caused widespread destruction and resulted in the deaths of more than 18,000 people.
